Students Attend the Metropolitan Opera
     On New Years Day, alumnus Edward Wooten III (presently a senior Music Education Major at Mansfield College in Pennsylvania), and students Louis Laniak (age 8) and Emma Nugent (age 9) attended the Metropolitan Opera's simulcast at the Regal Cinema in Eastview Mall with Karen Hagberg. They enjoyed Englebert Humperdink's famous opera Hansel & Gretel with a sold-out audience that included many children.

From the Top at Nazareth College
     Students Christina Basile (age 7), Michael Cash (age 12), Louis Laniak (age 8), Emma Nugent (age 9), Gabriel Nugent (age 7), Anne Repka (age 12), Paul Repka (age 14), Natalie Tse (age 9), Nicole Tse (age 13), and Jason Wooten (age 12) will attend the live broadcast of the famous radio program From the Top (WXXI-FM, Sundays at 5 p.m.) at Nazareth College on Sunday, January 20. From the Top features performances, interviews, and antics of classical musicians between the ages of eight and eighteen from around the United States. Begun in Boston several years ago, this program is now broadcast live from various venues around the country. This will be its first broadcast from Rochester.

Linda Nakagawa to Conduct Workshop
     On Saturday and Sunday, January 26-27, guest clinician Linda Nakagawa from Sacramento, California will conduct masterclasses for our students in the Hagberg Studio. Linda teaches all over the United States and in Singapore. She travels often to Japan for her own study and is the director of the Suzuki Piano Basics International 10-Piano Concert in Sacramento, held every two years.
     In addition to student lessons during the day, Linda will conduct a Question/Answer session for parents from 5:45-6:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a potluck supper for teachers and parents. All parents and their adult guests are welcome to attend this event whether or not your child is enrolled in the workshop. Please sign up in the studio.

Evening at the Dryden Theater
     On Saturday, March 22, all students and parents are invited to come to the Hagberg Studio for pizza at 6:30 p.m., followed by a film at the Dryden Theatre at the George Eastman House entitled Note by Note: the Making of Steinway L1037 , documenting the making of a grand piano from raw materials to the concert stage. This film has been called a "surprisingly fascinating new documentary," and will be of special interest to all piano students. Please sign up in the studio before March 20. The cost of the event is $10 per person.

Karen Hagberg to Japan
     In mid-April Karen will travel to Matsumoto, Japan to attend rehearsals and the performance of the 2008 10-Piano Concert. This year twenty-seven teachers and eighteen students from the United States will participate in this exciting and educational international event that is held every other year. Karen will be joined by Rochester teachers Lisa Cash and Teri Paradero and Lisa's daughter and student, Kristin Cash (age 16) who will perform in the concert.

International Friendship Concert.

     An International Friendship Concert, featuring students ages 7-19 from Japan and around the United States and Canada, will be held on Monday, August 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hochstein School, 50 North Plymouth Avenue. This event will occur in conjunction with the Suzuki Piano Basics Teacher Training Workshop to be held here in Rochester August 3-7, 2008, sponsored by Suzuki Piano Basics of Rochester. Two teachers and six students from Japan will reside here in Rochester for the week, in addition to 12 teachers and another ten students from around the U.S. and Canada. The repertoire for this concert will span a big range, from beginning to advanced. The concert will be a stunning example of the success of the Suzuki Piano Method.
     The concert is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. We invite all Rochesterians to join us in welcoming our out-of-town guests.
     The following students from the Hagberg Suzuki Piano Program will perform: Christina Basile (age 8), Nicholas Berkner (age 17), Jillian Foley (age 11), Nicole Franki (age 10), Benjamin Harrington (age 8), and Louis Laniak (age 8).

Alumni Present Program for Current Students.

     On Sunday, December 21 at 7:30 p.m., two alumni from the Hagberg Suzuki Piano Program will perform and answer questions for our students and parents. Edward Wooten III is currently a graduate student in Music Education at SUNY Fredonia. Fotina Naumenko is a voice performance major at the Eastman School of Music. Join us for an evening of music and information.
